Artist Statement:
A short horror scene that
tells the horror experience of a kidnapped victim being used as sacrificial
bait to lure a demon/ghost out into the real world.
Title of Piece:
Don’t look at the Mirror
Concept:
Horror/sci fi/ fantasy
Project Description:
A white room that is
equipped with a 40 inch television. There will be 10 or 20 small mirrors
attached to fishing lines, which will be hanged around the room and a projector
that projects a movie of a demon lurking from within the mirror leering hard at
the woman in the room. The projector will be placed behind the viewer. There
will be an additional wall of plastic that builds a wall, creating a smaller
space for the viewer and the television. This is to invade personal space of
the viewers, creating a sense of alertness to whatever roams behind the plastic
wall. The television will show a woman strapped on the floor and surrounded by
mirrors, trying very hard not to look at the mirror. A demon lurks restlessly
from inside the mirror trying to catch the attention of the women. She is the
key to his freedom. The woman keeps whispering to herself not to look at the
mirrors. For whenever the woman accidentally looks at the mirror, the demon,
which is dressed in black, gets to enter the world. Once the demon enters the
real world, the whole room will become dark. Then, the sound of horror will be
played.
Project History:
Mirrors are the doorways through which Death
enters the world. Stare long enough into a mirror, and you will see Death at
work." — Jean Cocteau.
It is known that demons or apparition in the
Superstitious world predicted how demon uses any kind of mediums to enter the real
world. It could be an item, time, or through human or animals.
Demons live in an outworldly realm and they
need a portal to enter our own reality. Many people believe a portal can be
opened with the use of an Ouija Board.
Other portals could be in our own being, paranoid schizophrenia could be a link
to altered mental states that may be connected to a strong psychic
ability, such as LSD took many people in an altered state of consciousness that
may open an inner portal within ourselves, that may allow a demon to inhabit
our bodies.
In tribal societies it is the belief that ones
reflection is actually ones soul. And by exposing ones soul it is made
vulnerable to evil influences and even death. It is believed that mirrors are
tools in which souls may be stolen for evil purposes. Mirrors have been used as
tools to increase clairvoyance and/or to gain knowledge of past lives. All
class levels have used mirrors to tell their futures. From the middles ages to
the 19th century, mirrors have been used by everyone including Catherine de
Medici and Henry IV (Guiley, 372).
